| 0 | No ability to communicate. |
| 1 | Beginner: You can count or read basic words. You might have basic greetings down. But you cannot hold much of a conversation. |
| 2 | Intermediate: You can understand the basic meaning of a sentence, if not all the words. You can get your point across, though it might be difficult. |
| 3 |
Fluent. You can get around and hold conversations, but may have trouble with pronunciation or a limited vocabulary. |

| 5 | Academic Fluency: You can understand difficult concepts, usually only known by specialists. |
